Nico DE LEU

Nico obtained his medical degree at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel in 2005. From 2005 until 2013, he combined a scientific training at the Diabetes Research Center, supported by the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO) and under supervision of Prof. Harry Heimberg, with a clinical education in internal medicine/endocrinology. In 2013, he promoted as an endocrinologist and continued his clinical work both at Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel and Algemeen Stedelijk Ziekenhuis Aalst. As a postdoctoral fellow, his research activity at BENE focuses on the role of VEGF-A signalling and the innate immune system in experimental beta cell regeneration and transplantation models.

As of September 2022, Willem and Nico succeeded Harry jointly as Principal Investigators of BENE.
