Biography
Harry Heimberg obtained a Master in Biological Sciences in 1986 and a PhD in Science in 1994 (promoter Frans Schuit), both at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). Following a postdoctoral stay at the Department of Cell Biology and Physiology, Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, USA (advisor Mike Mueckler), he became a group leader in 1998 at the Diabetes Research Center, VUB. In 2001 Harry became professor and is teaching students Biomedical Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy at the faculty of Medicine, VUB. Since 2007 he is director of the research group Beta Cell Neogenesis. Research at BENE is focused on mechanisms to control the functional beta cell mass.
